Mount Agung
History
Mount Agung is Bali’s highest and most sacred mountain, deeply connected to the island’s spiritual and cultural identity. In Balinese Hindu belief, it is considered the home of the gods and the center of the island’s spiritual balance.
The volcano has a long history of eruptions, with the most significant occurring in 1963, causing widespread destruction across Bali. Despite this, Mount Agung remains a sacred site and is home to Besakih Temple, Bali’s most important temple complex located on its slopes.

PURA PASAR AS START POINT
At 1500m above sea level, Pura Pasar Agung is one of the most popular starting points for Mount Agung, located high on the mountain’s eastern slopes. The terrain is steep and volcanic almost immediately, making it a challenging route despite the higher starting elevation.
MOUNT AGUNG SUMMIT
The summit of Mount Agung is a dramatic volcanic peak rising above the clouds, offering some of the most breathtaking views in Bali. The terrain near the top is steep, rocky, and exposed, creating a powerful sense of achievement upon reaching the summit.
At sunrise, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views stretching across the island, including Mount Rinjani on clear mornings. The summit also carries a strong spiritual atmosphere, with many locals viewing it as one of the most sacred places in Bali.

EDELWEIS START POINT
At 1500 meters above sea level, Edelweis start point is located on the southern slopes of Mount Agung, Edelweiss offers a scenic and cooler starting point surrounded by open grasslands and mountain views. The terrain begins relatively gentle before transitioning into steeper volcanic trails, making it a moderately challenging route with a more gradual start.
JOURNEY TO SUMMIT FROM EDELWEIS
The route from Edelweiss feels wide open and scenic, passing through rolling hills and volcanic landscapes before climbing into steeper rocky terrain near the summit. It’s less forested than other routes and offers expansive sunrise views throughout the ascent.

At 1400m above sea level, Pengubengan Temple is a sacred mountain temple that serves as a traditional starting point for climbing Mount Agung. Surrounded by forest and spiritual landmarks, the route begins with cooler jungle terrain before becoming steeper and more physically demanding higher up.
JOURNEY TO SUMMIT FROM PURA PENGUBENGAN
The hike from Pengubengan moves through dense forest, narrow trails, and rugged volcanic terrain with long uphill sections. The journey feels immersive and spiritual, gradually becoming more intense as the elevation increases toward the exposed summit ridge.
